Impact of cuts to welfare benefitspublished at 13:39 British Summer Time

Plaid Cymru MS Cefin Campbell asks “what assessment has the Welsh government made of the impact of cuts to welfare benefits on residents in mid and west Wales?”

The first minister replies she has written to the UK government’s work and pensions secretary to seek any assessment made of the impact of welfare reform in Wales.

She acknowledges there are “tens of thousands of people who are worried” about the impact of the reforms, and that the Welsh government is “very exercised” by the changes.

She insists the Welsh government has a “reasonably good” relationship with the Department for Work and Pensions.

In her Spring Statement last week, Labour Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced a number of benefit changes, including tightening qualification rules for Personal Independence Payments (Pips) – the main disability benefit – claimed by more than 250,000 working aged people in Wales.
